Restoring a Vintage Side Table
Переглядів 8 тис.8 місяців тому
ASMR Style video - I am sick at the moment so please enjoy the quiet. I purchased this side table specifically so that I could use it for a small 10-gallon fish tank. It has plenty of storage, doesn't take up a lot of room, fits in with my bedroom furniture, and most importantly it has a laminate top. While laminate isn't my favorite, there is no denying the durability of it. I also attempt to ...
$1,000 Teak Desk Restoration + Teak Chair
Переглядів 8 тис.Рік тому
In this video, you'll see two teak furniture pieces restored. One is a teak desk that is comprised of particle board with teak veneer and solid teak. The chair is solid teak with the exception of the cushion areas. For the sake of staging things together and efficiency in flipping multiple pieces of furniture at once I chose to restore both the desk and chair together. Update: The desk sold for...

7 Months at the Thrift Store is long enough
Переглядів 36 тис.Рік тому
The Kroehler dresser was in the thrift store for over 7 months. If you check out my 2nd thrift store video you will see this piece in that video. They were about to get rid of the piece from the thrift store, so I ended up purchasing it when it was half off. There were a lot of 'future-proofing' decisions made with this piece. It lasted for over 50 years, and I would like to see it last for ano...
Restoring a Discarded Dresser
Переглядів 51 тис.Рік тому
I found this dresser listed on Facebook Marketplace for a free curb side pick up. It was listed with a matching low boy dresser that was in much better condition. The lowboy was gone when I arrived, but I was able to pick up the chest of drawers and load it to take home. There was a lot of damage to the fluted drawer front, but hopefully the replacement suits the piece. Thank you for watching! ...
Just painted right over the problem.

I could show you the before and after of these side tables and it would seem rather uneventful. This restoration had some unhappy surprises in it, but in the end it all came together. Whenever I have seen anyone else popping on some veneer over laminate they have ALWAYS sanded the surface. I think not doing so was a mistake. It could pop up on your customer years down the road if it hasn't already before you sold it. You are right about the fumes of the contact cement -- wow! I never use a respirator for stain, paint or poly, but that stuff is bad. Definitely should be outside if at all possible. The fumes were even deadly the next day with the garage door open after the small boards I put together were supposedly dry. There was not laminate on the side? There was wood there? Did you peal it off? I got a laminate top and sides just below the top running all the way around. The laminate will have to be covered with the veneer in my case. I never considered removing it.

WOW Can’t believe that originally the manufacturer used tinted lacquer to finish the piece, hiding that beautiful wood grain and details! It doesn’t make sense to me but so happy you found this and restored it to better than new!

In a lot of these vids I never see a pair of end tables refinished. Don't people want a pair? I would think one lonely end-table would be hard to unload no matter how well it was restored. It won't match the other one they already have or will have to obtain from somewhere else. I would like to see someone make a matching pair out of two similar but not exactly the same end-tables just by putting an identical finish and hardware on it. I would buy that pair! Same with his and her (or his and his in my case) dressers.

oil based poly --- I approve! I like the pull down instead of the drawer. That would be easier to get into while in bed I would think. Nice job!

Beautiful restoration. When shortening a bolt, screw on a nut above the cut. After removing burrs from the cut, remove the nut to dress the threads.

I love the new veneer! It completely transformed the look, and it matched the top so nicely. The refurbished dresser is just beautiful, and I love the rich tone of the wood. I wasn’t a fan of the old hardware, and I’m glad you decided to paint the piece you kept black to match the new pulls. The black plastic one was nice, but it looked a little shabby with the interesting hexagonal pulls that you chose for the small drawers.

What a remarkable job you did! WOW had no idea it would turn out so wonderful. I honestly thought those cups holding the drawer pulls were plastic so when you tried to save them it was a puzzle, I am so glad you saved them it makes the piece, and with you doing the restoring it turned out fabulous. You are so talented, thank you also for talking us through your thoughts, what and why you are doing a particular treatment. It truly helps us viewers understand the difficulties that can happen with pieces you are restoring.

I'm half way through watching the MCM videos but are you the only female participating? If so that is shocking. You did a fantastic job. It was a lovely piece of furniture to begin with but your transformation has made it beautiful. I loved how you applied the filler - with your finger. I've noticed that the men use a tool. Like you I also use my fingers when applying filler (mainly on walls when I've removed a shelf and the rawl/wall plugs) as it applies better. A great project.
